Brief of Company Background
Founded in 1980, the company is the product of a merger of 7 timber and logging companies: PT Rimba Nusantara, PT Emporium Timber, PT Rimba Lapis Permai, PT Gonpu Indonesia Limited, PT Rimba Abadi, PT Madyakara Pacific Raya and PT Rimba Mafin. In 1990 and 1991, the company acquired 100% of the stock of two Riau companies: PT Arjuna Perdana Mahkota Plywood, a plywood manufacturer, and PT Inti Prona, a logging company. In 1992 the company and PT Inhutani I established a joint venture company, PT Sumalindo Hutani Jaya, to develop a plantation forest in East Kalimantan. In 1995, the company acquired 75% of PT Nityasa Mandiri shares, aMDF (medium density fiberboard) producer. In the same year, the company through PT Arjuna Perdana Mahkota Plywood, acquired 51% of PT Injapsin Company shares, a timber concessionaire which used to manage concession rights of over 710,000 ha of natural forest and 43,000 ha of industrial plantation forest. The company also operates two MDF mills which have a total annual capacity of 200,000 cubic meters. All of its business is located in East Kalimantan, Irian Jaya, Riau and Jambi. In 1996, the company and its subsidiaries produced a total of 291,600 cubic meters of logs and sold 229,400 cubic meters of ordinary plywood, secondary processed plywood and block board. About 86% of these products were exported. In 1999 the company also sold 36,600 cubic meters of MDF, including 2,000 cubic meters of secondary processed MDF. Up to 55% of these products were exported.
