US Inflation Expectations Trigger Rupiah Depreciation

The rupiah exchange rate has the potential to weaken on Monday (24/5) in line with persistently high market expectations of rising inflation in the US.

Money Market Observer Ariston Tjendra said the increase in inflation could change the US Central Bank's monetary policy to be tighter. The monetary tightening in the US could encourage the strengthening of the US dollar.

"The potential for weakening is towards Rp14,400 per US dollar and support is at the level of Rp14,300 per US dollar," he said in Jakarta.

Furthermore, the market is looking forward to the statement by the board of governors of the US Central Bank regarding the future monetary policy on Tuesday evening.

In addition, the increase in COVI-19 cases in the world is also a concern for the market, which could trigger the market to leave risky assets.
