BI Says Current Account Deficit 0.4% of GDP in First Quarter


The current account in the first quarter of 2021 recorded a low deficit amidst a surplus in the balance of goods.

Based on Bank Indonesia (BI) records, the current account recorded a deficit of US$1.0 billion or 0.4% of GDP, after the previous quarter recorded a surplus of US $ 0.9 billion or 0.3% of GDP.

Head of the Communication Department of Bank Indonesia (BI) Erwin Haryono said this development was supported by the achievement of a goods balance surplus due to improved export performance in line with increased demand from trading partner countries and rising world commodity prices.

"In line with the positive export performance and domestic demand that continues to improve, import performance has also increased quite high, thus holding back a further goods balance surplus," he said on Friday (21/5).
