Rupiah Seen Weaken Against Dollar on Rising New COVID-19 Cases

The rupiah exchange rate on Friday (16/7) has the potential to weaken due to rising new cases of COVID-19 in the world and in Indonesia.

"This increase in cases is associated with the potential for an economic slowdown due to the policy of limiting economic activity to control the pandemic," said money market observer Ariston Tjendra in Jakarta.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of a potential third wave in the world if precautions are not taken.

"New cases of COVID-19 in Indonesia are still setting new records and there is the potential for an extended emergency week which will certainly put pressure on the economy," he explained.

The potential for the weakening of the rupiah against the US dollar today is towards 14550 per dollar, with potential support in the range of 14460 per dollar.
