Rupiah Seen In Pressure on Tapering Speculation

The exchange rate of the rupiah against the US dollar on Thursday (5/8) has the potential to weaken, triggered by the statement by the Fed officials last night about the possibility of tapering.

"Last night, at an online event in the US, Fed Deputy Governor Richard Clarida revealed the opportunity for tapering to occur at the end of the year. This tapering will reduce liquidity and encourage the strengthening of the US dollar," said Money Market Observer Ariston Tjendra in Jakarta.

In addition, market concerns regarding the COVID-19 case are still a factor depressing the rupiah and other emerging exchange rates.

On the other hand, if Indonesia's 2nd quarter GDP data exceeds economists' expectations of 6.5% YoY, this could halt the rupiah's weakening rate today.

The rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar has the potential to weaken to the range of 14,350 per US dollar, with potential support at 14,300 per US dolla
