Rupiah Seen Depressed as Covid-19 Cases Continue to Reach Records

The situation of new cases of COVID-19, the delta variant, which continues to reach records, has suppressed the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar.

"Emergency Community Activity Restriction (PPKM) that lasts longer can suppress economic growth," said Money Market Observer Ariston Tjendra in Jakarta, Friday (9/7).

In addition, indications of monetary tightening by the US Central Bank could occur sooner than previously estimated, helping strengthen the US dollar against other exchange rates.

In the minutes of their meeting released Thursday morning yesterday, Fed officials began to consider reducing monthly asset purchases if economic data improves.

The purchase of assets is one of the central bank's monetary stimuli to move the economy with low-yield liquidity.

The potential for the rupiah's weakening today is 14,580 per US dollar, with potential support at 14,500 per US dollar.
