Concerns over Covid-19 Delta Variant Pressures Rupiah Against Dollar


The rupiah exchange rate on Thursday (8/7) has the potential to weaken following the correction in the regional exchange rate against the US dollar.

"The situation of increasing new cases of COVID-19 due to the delta variant has become a concern for global market players. And this has also pushed the market into the US dollar looking for safe assets," said Money Market Observer Ariston Tjendra in Jakarta.

On the other hand, the minutes of the US Central Bank's monetary policy meeting this morning indicate the possibility that the US Central Bank will taper or reduce asset purchases, especially housing loan securities, more quickly.

"The Central Bank shows that the condition of the US housing sector has improved. The portion of mortgage securities in the Fed's monthly asset purchases is 40 billion US dollars out of a total of 120 billion US dollars," he explained.
