Rupiah Seen Depreciating on Worries over Rise in Global Covid-19 Cases


The rupiah exchange rate has the potential to experience pressure against the US dollar on Monday (12/7), triggered by market concerns about the increase in new global COVID-19 cases due to the delta variant.

"Global governments usually impose restrictions on economic activity to control the pandemic, which can suppress economic growth so that the market enters the safe asset of the US dollar," said Money Market Observer Ariston Tjendra in Jakarta.

On the other hand, the easing of the monetary policy of the Central Bank of China, which reduced the reserve requirement by 50 basis points, effective July 15, may be able to keep the rupiah and other exchange rates from weakening too deeply against the US dollar.

The new policy could help increase liquidity in the market and encourage market participants to enter riskier assets.
