Rise in US Bond Yields Sends Rupiah Lower to Dollar
The rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar, which was transacted between banks in Jakarta on Tuesday morning, weakened as the increase in yield on US bonds put the national currency under pressure.
At 9:52 WIB, the rupiah weakened 13 points or 0.09% to Rp14,608 per US dollar, compared to the position at the previous closing trade of Rp14,595 per US dollar.
"The US government bond yields rose as the market digested the Fed Governor Jerome Powell's statement that the US central bank is still committed to maintaining loose policy," said the Monex Investindo Futures Research Team in Jakarta on Tuesday (13/4).
The expectation of solid US economic growth, supported by large stimulus and aggressive vaccination efforts in the US, sent the US bonds' yields higher.
The yield on the 10-year US bond rose to 1.67% on Monday (12/4) after the Federal Reserve Chairman Powell reiterated the Fed's commitment to maintaining the loose or dovish monetary policy.
Furthermore, today the market will be waiting for the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) data which is scheduled for release at 19.30 WIB.
