Minister Lutfi: Indonesia Trade Sector Growth Target of 6.3% in 2021, Achievable

Trade Minister Muhammad Lutfi said Indonesia could achieve the trade sector growth target of 6.3% this year.

"I am sure that we will achieve the target to grow 6.3% in the trade sector in 2021. In 2022, the growth will be even higher," Lutfi said in the webinar Economic Recovery: How To Accelerate Economic Growth, Wednesday (27/1).

He assessed that Indonesia is transforming from a seller of raw and semi-finished goods to industrial and high-tech industrial goods.

In 2020, Indonesia succeeded in exporting palm oil, coal, steel, automotive, and jewelry. The top ten export destination countries are China, the United States, Japan, India, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, and Myanmar.

"Well, if we look at the sequence of our investment system, (they) come first to Indonesia, trade with Indonesia, then invest in Indonesia, we are improving our industrial system, turning back into our export trade. This sequence is indeed a new economic trend in the world, "he explained.

To become a developed country, the former Indonesian Ambassador to the United States emphasized that consumption to gross domestic product (GDP) should be around 30% and export and import must be higher or be 50%.

"Hopefully, with the transformation, we can achieve growth in the trade sector of around 7.5% in 2022," he said.
