Rupiah May Fall as Concerns over US Inflation Triggers Risk-Aversion


Market players' concerns about rising inflation in the US may trigger risk-averse actions that could depress the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar this Wednesday (19/5).

Money Market Observer Ariston Tjendra said that the strengthening of the rupiah was not very convincing yesterday; it only strengthened slightly. This could indicate that the opportunity for rupiah depreciation is still open.

"Market participants avoided risky assets with the weakening of the Asian stock index, which followed yesterday's decline in the US stock index," he said in Jakarta.

The market still thinks the US Central Bank will not change its monetary easing policy soon because US employment data has not shown a recovery like before the pandemic.

Market participants are looking forward to the minutes of the US monetary policy meeting released in the early hours of the morning.
